What is free hosting?

Some companies run completely free hosting services for their users. There are many reasons for running your own free host, ranging from a method to reach customers and get them onto your host before convincing them to upgrade to a paid plan, through to a hobby that the site admins are simply enjoying. Careful consideration should be given if using a free host as many are just in it for the short term, the aim being to sign up as many users as possible before selling the site. These free hosts are often very unstable as they recieve a large number of spammer accounts which can slow down or completely stop other accounts on the server. There are also free hosts which are run excellently, often with a strict sign up policy.
